Method
How the score is built
We read your website the way a guest books: on a phone, starting from the homepage and following the Book button. Then we score what we saw out of 100.
How a scan works
We open your homepage in a headless Chromium browser on a 390 × 844 phone profile and capture what a guest sees first.
We tap the first Book, Reserve or Check availability control and count every click until a price appears. We note each change of domain, every new tab and which booking engine answers.
Along that path we record links to travel sites such as Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Tripadvisor, Agoda, Trivago and Kayak, and review badges that send guests away.
We load the homepage again at 1440 × 900 on a desktop, run Lighthouse on mobile, and read your structured data, robots.txt, llms.txt and sitemap the way an AI assistant would.
Every finding links to a captured plate: a screenshot with the viewport and capture date.
What we never do
- We never make a booking, fill a guest form or reach payment.
- We only follow public pages and never work around a block, a captcha or a login.
- We stop if robots.txt asks our scanner (HotelTeardown) to stay out, and we never scan a domain on our removal list.
- We run one scan at a time and stop after 60 seconds if your homepage does not answer.
Seven weighted categories
Each category starts at its weight and loses points for every problem we find. Weights reflect how much each one moves direct bookings, and add up to 100.
- Direct booking experience25 pts
- Whether a guest on a phone finds Book, how many clicks it takes to see a price, and whether booking leaves your site.
- Booking engine and tracking10 pts
- Which booking engine you use, whether GA4 is installed and whether tracking survives the hand-off to the engine.
- Retention and leakage15 pts
- Links to travel sites along the booking path, review badges that send guests away, and whether you ask leavers to stay in touch.
- Direct-booking levers20 pts
- Reasons to book direct: a best-rate promise, perks for direct guests, member rates and a date picker on the homepage.
- Technical performance10 pts
- Lighthouse performance and accessibility on a throttled mobile connection, and images without alternative text.
- AI-agent readiness12 pts
- Whether an AI assistant can read your rooms, rates and policies: Hotel structured data, server-rendered content, llms.txt and robots rules for AI crawlers.
- SEO and AEO8 pts
- Search and answer-engine basics: title, description, Open Graph, canonical, sitemap, FAQ markup, a main heading and page language.
Grade bands and severity
Each finding is tagged High, Medium or Low and shows the points it cost. The free score shows the three highest-impact findings by title; the full report shows up to ten, each with evidence, a plate and a fix.
Benchmarks compare your Lighthouse scores and overall score with independent hotels of the same size. Until enough hotels have been scanned, cohort figures are clearly labelled sample data.
